AFTER TREATMENT – PAIN REACTIONS
Written by: Justin Lam

  • Treatments carried out by the Therapist are directed toward helping your body to alter painful fascial dysfunction to change to a more appropriate pain-free state.  By adjusting the soft tissues of your body, changes occur which alter various reflex actions.

  • After treatment the body systems continue to adjust to the new signals that have been introduced during the treatment session.  A treatment reaction can take many days to settle down as the body slowly re-aligns itself.

  • These reactions can include: dull pain, dizziness, nausea, numbness, sharp jabbing pain, change in bowel elimination, etc.  PLEASE NOTE: Such reactions are normal – do not panic!  Should severe pain last longer than three days, please consult the Therapist regarding the appropriate management of your treatment reaction.

SELF-HELP MEASURES TO REDUCE PAINFUL REACTIONS

  1. Take a warm shower or bath and gently rub the painful part of the body.

  2. Do not seek any other form of treatment for at least 3 days after your full body facilitatory session unless you have consulted with your Therapist.  The body needs time to stabilize and further stimulation will only inhibit the body in its self-healing phase.

  3. In the evening following treatment don’t be over active.  Go to bed early if possible and drink plenty of water.

  4. Sit correctly with the low back supported, no sitting with the buttocks lower than the knees on a low chesterfield and do not cross the knees or ankles.

  5. Worry of fear will only make the treatment reactions worse so take measures to relax, i.e. soothing music, warm shower.

  6. Mild pain can move about the body for 10 to 14 days after a treatment.

NOTE:  If severe pain lasts for more than three days after therapy or you are concerned/worried about the nature of the symptoms being experienced, please telephone my office and take to your Therapist
